Serial Thief Arrested in Warsaw After Targeting Properties in Wilanów and Mokotów

Warsaw police have apprehended a 70-year-old recidivist suspected of committing a series of thefts and attempted burglaries across the Wilanów and Mokotów districts by exploiting unsecured residential properties.

Modus Operandi of a Recidivist

Investigators determined that the 70-year-old suspect gained access to residential buildings and outbuildings through unlocked doors or gates. He targeted cash, mobile phones, documents, payment cards, and personal valuables left unattended by owners.

The suspect, who has a history of property crimes including burglaries of diplomatic residences, was recently released from prison. Police linked him to five separate incidents occurring in May and June.

Investigation and Evidence Gathering

Wilanów criminal detectives analyzed surveillance footage and identified the suspect’s physical description and behavioral patterns. Following extensive operational activities, officers located the man and took him into custody.

A search of the suspect’s makeshift residence—an attic in a stairwell—led to the discovery of clothing, including shoes and a hat, which matched items seen in security footage from the crime scenes.

Legal Status and Potential Sentencing

The suspect has been formally charged with five counts of theft and attempted theft. While police requested temporary detention due to his recidivism, the prosecutor has ordered police supervision instead.

The suspect faces up to five years in prison. Under recidivism laws, the court may impose a sentence at the upper limit of the statutory range, increased by an additional fifty percent.
