Terlecki on the Origins of the PiS Split
Rozw贸j Plus parliamentary club MP Ryszard Terlecki stated during a Monday interview on Radio Wnet that his decision to leave Law and Justice (PiS) came quite recently, though the overall disintegration process within the party began much earlier.
He noted that internal problems and leadership tensions started over a year ago, manifesting as repeated attacks, complaints, and critical remarks directed at former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during leadership meetings.
Morawiecki Stops Attending Leadership Meetings
Terlecki explained that this situation lasted for a long time, eventually leading Mateusz Morawiecki to stop attending leadership gatherings because they turned into reprimands with little else happening.
He added that a group of participants within the presidium of the political committee seemed determined to get rid of or completely marginalize Morawiecki, prompting the idea of establishing a more formalized backing for those supporting the former prime minister.
Dispute Over Strategy Regarding Confederation
Addressing past voter shifts, Terlecki pointed out that a portion of former PiS voters had drifted toward Confederation or Grzegorz Braun’s Confederation of the Polish Crown.
A dispute then arose over how to respond, with the party leadership favoring an effort to win back those voters through a more radicalized message, though this approach yielded little effect. Meanwhile, the Rozw贸j Plus association was intended to appeal to more centrist voters as the “second lung of PiS.”
Potential Future Cooperation and Ultimatum Deadline
The politician did not rule out future cooperation with PiS, including a joint list in parliamentary elections and a potential coalition government attempt.
At midnight between July 23 and 24, a deadline set by the PiS leadership for parliamentarians expired, requiring them to declare under threat of expulsion that they did not belong to associations carrying out political activities in response to Morawiecki founding Rozw贸j Plus.
Disciplinary Actions and Formation of Rozw贸j Plus Club
PiS leader Jaros艂aw Kaczy艅ski stated that politicians who refused to sign had resigned from party membership, though the PiS Political Committee later referred unsubmitted statements to party discipline spokesperson Karol Karski rather than immediately expelling the members.
Despite this, Rozw贸j Plus politicians registered a separate parliamentary club at the end of July consisting of 40 MPs, making it the third largest in the Sejm, led by Morawiecki with 艁ukasz Schreiber as deputy chair.
The club includes MPs Janusz Cieszy艅ski, Marcin Hora艂a, Pawe艂 Jab艂o艅ski, 艁ukasz Kmita, Maria Koc, Anna Kwiecie艅, Marzena Macha艂ek, Monika Paw艂owska, Olga Semeniuk-Patkowska, 艁ukasz Schreiber, Miros艂awa Stachowiak-R贸偶ecka, Krzysztof Szczucki, Szymon Szynkowski vel S臋k, Ryszard Terlecki, Sylwester Tu艂ajew, and Senator W艂odzimierz Bernacki.
