The E5 Group’s Five Messages for Trump and Erdogan

Following a summit in Berlin on June 24, leaders from Poland, Italy, Germany, the UK, and France established a five-point agenda to shape upcoming transatlantic and NATO defense strategies.

The Berlin Summit and Key Objectives

The E5 group, consisting of Donald Tusk, Giorgia Meloni, Friedrich Merz, Keir Starmer, and Emmanuel Macron, met in Berlin on Wednesday to discuss the NATO summit in Ankara, peace in Ukraine, Middle Eastern stability, and defense industry cooperation.

Chancellor Merz confirmed that the leaders developed five core messages, focusing on trans-Atlantic security, strengthening the European pillar of the Alliance, deepening trans-Atlantic cooperation, supporting Ukraine at the Ankara summit, and facilitating negotiations between the United States and Iran. Merz stated that he intends to brief Donald Trump and Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the outcomes of these discussions.

Tusk Emphasizes Eastern Flank Security

Prime Minister Donald Tusk underscored that the E5 meeting serves as a guarantee of European and trans-Atlantic unity. He stressed that Poland will ensure that states directly threatened by Russian aggression are represented in all key security formats, noting that progress against aggressive eastern neighbors is impossible without the inclusion of Poland, the Baltic and Scandinavian nations, and Romania.

Tusk highlighted Poland’s practical commitment, citing the upcoming reconstruction conference for Ukraine and the nation’s significant defense spending, which reaches nearly 7 percent of its GDP. The Prime Minister expressed a firm desire for these contributions and the security concerns of the eastern flank to be clearly articulated during the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara.
