Prime Minister Donald Tusk has strongly defended the candidacy of Maciej Berek for the Constitutional Tribunal, acknowledging potential disappointment over former ministers while urging support to fix the judiciary.
Praise for Berek
Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that Maciej Berek is one of Poland’s most outstanding legal practitioners. The head of government noted that Berek is a patriot through and through, someone he has observed for many years and who has proven capable of debating constitutional issues with him.
Tusk added that he knows no one better prepared to help repair the situation regarding the defective Constitutional Tribunal.
Addressing Political Compromises
The ruling coalition previously promised to depoliticize the judiciary, including the Constitutional Tribunal. Tusk acknowledged that some may feel disappointed by the nomination because of the rule against former ministers, stating that he understands and is convinced by this principle.
Tusk announced that he gave conditional consent for Berek to leave the government and run for the Tribunal, while appealing for support for the nomination to resolve the crisis within the coming weeks.
