Up to PLN 21,000 per gram: Why some space rocks can cost more than gold

An unassuming rock fragment found in a field or desert can be worth thousands of euros per gram, though most ordinary meteorites do not command such extreme collector prices.

A meteorite can cost more than gold

The meteorite market is highly diverse. While common specimens are relatively inexpensive, collectors are willing to pay many times the value of gold for exceptionally rare fragments. The final valuation depends not only on the mass of the find, but above all on its classification, origin, market availability, and state of preservation.

The price of precious metals is relatively easy to determine. Gold quotations change every day, but at any given moment, the market value of a gram of bullion of a specific purity can be calculated. In the case of meteorites, the mechanism is completely different. There is no single official price per gram of space rock. Two fragments of identical weight can have completely different values. Particularly rare meteorites can reach prices counted in thousands of euros per gram. In extreme cases, the value can reach around 5,000 euros per gram, which at an exchange rate of around 4.25-4.30 PLN per euro means over 21,000 PLN for just one gram of rock. However, this does not mean that an average meteorite is worth that much. Such rates apply to specific specimens.

What influences the price of a meteorite?

Meteorites are not a homogeneous category of goods. Fragments of various Solar System bodies reach Earth, and they can have different origins, compositions, and histories. Even whether the fall was observed can matter. A fragment recovered directly after a spectacular event may arouse more interest than a similar rock found accidentally many years later.

Lunar and Martian meteorites are the most expensive

Lunar and Martian meteorites constitute a special category. Their origin is one of the reasons for their high value. A powerful impact of another body on a planet’s surface can eject a rock with such high velocity that it overcomes gravitational pull. Subsequently, the fragment travels through outer space for a very long time. A small part of such material may eventually cross Earth’s orbit, enter the atmosphere, and survive the journey to the surface. A similar mechanism applies to lunar meteorites.

It is precisely the possibility of owning an actual fragment of the Moon or Mars that makes such specimens particularly sought after by collectors. At the same time, the finder’s mere assertion that the stone comes from a given planet has no evidentiary value. The origin of the meteorite must be confirmed by specialized research.

Looks like a meteorite? Most often it is not

This is an important caveat for people who, after reading information about the high prices of space rocks, begin to look more closely at stones in fields or forests. The vast majority of objects reported as potential meteorites turn out to be terrestrial rocks or remnants of human activity. The Polish Meteorite Portal indicates that basalts and industrial waste, including slag, are frequently confused with meteorites. Therefore, the first stage should not be valuation, but identification of the find.

The Polish Meteorite Society conducts free-of-charge verification of specimens suspected of having extraterrestrial origin. Specialists recommend first comparing the find with typical meteorites and pseudometeorites, and then—if the rock’s features are indeed unusual—conducting further identification.

Found a suspicious rock? Do not cut it immediately

The state of preservation can matter for both research and subsequent collector value. Therefore, accidentally finding an unusual rock should not be a signal to immediately perform home tests. Cutting, grinding, treating with chemical substances, or intensive cleaning can damage the specimen. The problem is particularly important in the case of fresh falls. The surface of a meteorite may contain features crucial for its identification, such as a fusion crust formed during flight through the atmosphere.

A kilogram of such rock would be worth millions? The market does not work that way

The information that an exceptional meteorite can reach a price of 5,000 euro per gram leads to a simple calculation. Theoretically, a kilogram of material at such a rate would be worth as much as 5 million euro. However, such a conversion cannot be automatically applied to actual transactions. The price per gram does not necessarily remain identical as mass increases. The meteorite market is a collector market, not a uniform commodity market similar to the gold market.

For example, a small fragment of an exceptionally rare meteorite can achieve a very high unit price. This does not mean that the appearance of a kilogram fragment would automatically multiply that price by a thousand. Greater supply of a specific material can affect its availability and valuation. Therefore, the term “21,000 PLN per gram” should be understood as a possible price level for the rarest specimens, rather than the standard rate prevailing on the market.

A meteorite is not gold

The difference between gold and meteorites is fundamental. Gold is a raw material with an extensive global market, current quotations, and a benchmark price. The value of a specific specimen is determined individually. Classification, documentation, rarity, and interest from potential buyers all matter. In practice, one can have two fragments weighing 10 grams each, of which one will be worth relatively little, while the second—if it turns out to be an extremely rare and well-documented material—can reach a price many times higher.

Can you search for meteorites in Poland?

The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage explains outright that searching for meteorites does not require a permit from the voivodeship monuments conservator. The reason is simple. Under this act, a monument must be, among other things, a human work or be related to human activity. A meteorite is not such an item. However, this does not mean complete freedom to conduct searches. Searching requires the consent of the landowner. This applies to both the search for monuments and items that are not monuments. In practice, entering someone else’s property and starting a meteorite search does not become legal just because the goal is not to find a monument.
