Wassermann Defends PiS Diversity as Internal Rift Deepens Over Morawiecki

Law and Justice MP Małgorzata Wassermann praises Jarosław Kaczyński’s sharp mind while defending the ideological diversity within PiS as the party navigates a major internal split and ultimatum fallout.

Wassermann on Kaczyński and Party Diversity

– The chairman has a razor-sharp mind – said Małgorzata Wassermann in Aleksandra Pawlicka and Renata Grochal’s “Political Triangle”. – He is in better shape than Trump – she added.

According to the MP, this is not the appropriate moment for Kaczyński to retire from politics. She assessed that after his departure, a new party operating under a different name could emerge.

– Law and Justice has been a large party for a very long time. There are people among us who are far-right. There are those among us who are far-left – they are not Catholics and have very liberal views. There is also a substantial center, which accommodates a great many people – she said, adding that “the party has no problem with this.”

Social Media Criticism and Leadership Tensions

Wassermann also drew attention to negative statements appearing on social media. – I turn on the internet and read basically all anonymous statements – she said. – Please name someone by first and last name who will say that Przemysław Czarnek is a bad candidate – she continued.

Journalists pointed out that individuals associated with Morawiecki have repeatedly made such accusations. Opinions have also appeared from politicians that the party is “shifting very strongly to the right.”

The Ultimatum and the Party Split

At midnight on July 23, the deadline for an ultimatum issued by the PiS leadership to the party’s parliamentarians expired. By then, they were required to submit declarations of non-membership in associations, with failure to comply penalized by exclusion from the party. This referred primarily to members of former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s Rozwój Plus association and Jacek Sasin’s Po pierwsze Polska.

A day later, on July 24, PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński announced that “thirty-something” MPs from his formation “had resigned from membership.” – Next Tuesday, the Political Committee will meet to take note of this fact – he added. Meanwhile, Mateusz Morawiecki reported that his association currently has 44 members, comprising 40 MPs, one senator, and three MEPs.

From that moment, the conflict between PiS and the circles gathered around the Rozwój Plus association has escalated. Following the split, politicians began a tour of right-wing media outlets, where each presents their own version of events. In one interview, Jarosław Kaczyński stated that Morawiecki has a “complicated biography and for a long time was on the side that attacked.” Jacek Sasin also reproached cooperation with Donald Tusk, writing on X, “You learned your lesson from Tusk exceptionally well.” Politicians also argued over joint participation in television programs. “The PiS club is withdrawing its representatives from television programs if MPs from Rozwój Plus will also participate,” announced Waldemar Buda. Some loyalist politicians also began to argue that Morawiecki was allegedly critical of the 500 plus program and the purchase of F-35 fighter jets for the Polish military.

Political Committee Decision and New Parliamentary Club

On Tuesday, July 28, the split was supposed to be sealed by the PiS Political Committee, but ultimately this did not happen. The party authorities decided not to expel Morawiecki or his supporters from the ranks.

On the same day, Morawiecki announced the creation of the Rozwój Plus parliamentary club. – This will be our forum for future action – he added.

He then criticized the PiS politicians with whom he remains in dispute. – What the PiS leadership has been proclaiming for a few days has happened, taking two steps forward, one step back, then the reverse. We do not want to get involved in party games, because they serve no one. The real splitters and intriguers will act this way the whole time. They want to operate so that we deal with ourselves. They are playing for our defeat, because they know that if PiS fails, they will take over the party – assessed the former prime minister.
