Wroclaw Ukrainian National to Stand Trial for Sabotage and UPA Glorification

An 18-year-old Ukrainian citizen faces life imprisonment in Wroclaw for acts of sabotage, including painting UPA slogans on monuments and planning a drone attack during a 2025 military parade.

Foreign Intelligence Sabotage Charges

Illia K. will answer to charges of conducting sabotage on behalf of foreign intelligence. Between November 2024 and August 2025, the accused allegedly carried out systemic operations to destabilize Poland, leading to his arrest by the Internal Security Agency (ABW) on August 12, 2025.

Desecration of National Monuments

According to the National Prosecutor’s Office, the defendant spray-painted symbols and slogans glorifying the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) on prominent sites. Targeted locations included the Monument to the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto, the Volhynia Massacre monument in Domostawa, and buildings belonging to the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw.

Calculated Destabilization Efforts

Prosecutor Przemysław Nowak stated that the actions were designed to incite national hatred, deepen social antagonisms between Poles and Ukrainians, and project a sense of state helplessness. The accused is charged with 45 separate acts of vandalism and participating in an organized criminal group tasked with sabotage.

Financial Motivations and Legal Status

While K. initially confessed, he later retracted his statement and exercised his right to silence. Investigations indicate the motive was purely financial, with the defendant receiving payments, including cryptocurrency, for his tasks. He remains under indictment for preparing a drone-based diversion for the 2025 Armed Forces Day parade.

Ongoing Judicial Proceedings

The Wroclaw Regional Court will preside over the case, where the defendant faces up to life imprisonment. Legal proceedings against other identified members of the criminal group are being handled in a separate, ongoing investigation.
