Poland to Tighten Rules on Driver Penalty Points

New regulations coming into effect June 3, 2026, will significantly limit the ability of drivers in Poland to remove penalty points.

End of Easy Penalty Point Removal

Drivers in Poland face upcoming changes that will make it more difficult to erase penalty points from their licenses. The new regulations, prepared by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration, will significantly restrict the possibility of point removal, effectively eliminating it for most serious offenses.

Loss of Privilege for Serious Offenses

From June 3, 2026, drivers will see a clear tightening of rules regarding penalty points. The proposed legislation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration (MSWiA) limits reductions to only 45 percent of offenses – and only the least dangerous ones.

Offenses Ineligible for Point Removal

The most significant change concerns training courses at the Provincial Road Traffic Centers (WORD). These courses previously allowed drivers to substantially reduce their accumulated penalty points. The new regulations significantly limit this option, making it impossible for particularly dangerous offenses.

Only Minor Errors Allow Reduction

After the new rules take effect, the possibility of reducing penalty points for traffic violations will be reserved exclusively for less serious infractions.

Approximately 45 Percent of Offenses Exempt

As a result, around 45 percent of all traffic offenses will be removed from the point reduction system.

New Rules for Counting 24 Penalty Points

The new regulations also aim to close loopholes that allowed drivers to avoid consequences after exceeding the 24-point limit. A key change concerns the timing of point calculation, which will now be determined on the day the limit is actually exceeded, rather than when the application is submitted.

Changes Apply to All Drivers, Including Foreigners

The project also includes changes to how points are totaled for a single incident and the introduction of new categories of offenses. Regulations concerning foreign drivers have also been clarified to avoid jurisdictional disputes between institutions.
