PKP Intercity is testing a self check-in system on Pendolino trains, potentially eliminating traditional ticket inspections by early 2026.
Ticketless Travel Trials Begin
PKP Intercity is piloting new solutions that could fundamentally change rail travel in Poland. The self check-in service, currently being tested on select Pendolino trains, allows passengers to confirm their journey via a mobile app, bypassing traditional ticket checks.
The changes are part of a broader modernization effort encompassing ticket sales and passenger service.
How the Self Check-In Works
Passengers no longer need to wait for a conductor. After taking their seat, a few clicks in the PKP Intercity app confirm their presence on the train. This information is sent directly to the train’s system and the conductor’s terminal, eliminating the need for physical ticket inspection.
Focus on Passenger Comfort and Efficiency
According to PKP Intercity board member Joanna Siecińska, the primary goal is to save time and increase passenger comfort, particularly on busy routes and during peak hours. The system also aims for more discreet service, avoiding interruptions to passengers’ work, conversations, or rest.
Future Expansion and Additional Improvements
The pilot program is currently limited, and the company has not yet indicated whether it will expand to all Pendolino services or other train categories. However, work is underway to create a system for wider implementation in the future.
Beyond Self Check-In: Modernizing the Passenger Experience
PKP Intercity is planning a comprehensive package of changes to modernize ticket purchasing and trip planning in the coming years.
Visual Seat Reservations and Enhanced Information
One highly anticipated improvement is graphical seat reservations for connecting tickets. Currently, passengers with multi-train tickets can only specify preferences like window or aisle. PKP Intercity plans to introduce a full, visual seat selection process for these connections, with work beginning this year and completion expected between late 2026 and early 2027.
Push Notifications, Joint Tickets, and Social Login
The mobile app will also be enhanced with push notifications for travel changes, such as schedule adjustments. While platform information won’t be included initially, it’s a planned future development. Discussions are also underway with cities to introduce joint rail-city tickets, similar to the system in Warsaw, and to allow login via social media accounts.
AI-Powered Support and Updated Ticketing Systems
PKP Intercity plans to implement an AI-powered voicebot for its helpline to reduce wait times. Ticket machines will be equipped with customer monitors for transaction viewing and self-service seat selection. A new central sales system is also being developed to replace the existing “Kurs” system.
