Polish Bishop Antoni Dydycz Dies at 87

Antoni Pacyfik Dydycz, the 87-year-old retired bishop of the Diocese of Drohiczyń, has passed away.

His Life and Career

Former bishop Antoni Dydycz was born in 1938 and served as the Warsaw Province of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchins’ provincial from 1976 to 1982. Concurrently, he chaired the Conference of Superiors of Men and Women’s Orders and Congregations. In 1994, he attained the academic degree of doctor of humanities at the Humanities Faculty of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

Drohiczyń Diocese Bishop

In 1994, Pope John Paul II appointed him as the Drohiczyń diocese bishop. He received his episcopal consecration on July 10, 1994, from Archbishop Józef Kowalczyk, the Apostolic Nuncio in Poland, and that same day conducted his inauguration into the Drohiczyń cathedral.

Key Roles and Achievements

His episcopal motto was “Populus Tuus – hereditas Tua – Lud Twój – dziedzictwem Twoim.” He was also the chairman of the aiding services to the Eastern Church Committee of the Polish Episcopate Conference. Dydycz coordinated the preparations for initiating the beatification process of Eastern martyrs – military chaplains murdered in the East, including victims of the Katyń Massacre.

Retirement

In March 2014, after 20 years of episcopal service, he retired.
