Climate and Environment Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska was excluded from coalition talks by Polska 2050 and now faces a parliamentary vote of no confidence.
Minister Excluded from Coalition Meeting, Cites Twitter Communication
Paulina Hennig-Kloska stated she initially accepted a meeting proposal from Polska 2050 with the understanding a discussion would take place. However, Polska 2050 did not attend a subsequent organized meeting, instead appearing the following day as an opposition force during a departmental inspection.
Hennig-Kloska expressed frustration, noting she was “summoned via Twitter” while her counterpart in Health, Jolanta Sobierańska-Grendy, received a direct invitation from the head of Polska 2050. She lamented the “political theatrics” and called for coalition cooperation.
No-Confidence Motions Scheduled for Thursday
The Sejm (Polish Parliament) is scheduled to debate motions of no confidence against both Hennig-Kloska and Health Minister Sobierańska-Grendy on Thursday. The motion against Hennig-Kloska has support from within Polska 2050, with some members potentially voting for her removal.
Dispute Over “Czyste Powietrze” Program and Deposit System
Concerns within Polska 2050 include the implementation of the “Czyste Powietrze” (Clean Air) program and the deposit system for packaging. Hennig-Kloska pointed out that the “Czyste Powietrze” program falls under the purview of a deputy minister from Polska 2050, suggesting questions should be directed to him.
She also defended the program’s current state, attributing past issues to decisions made by her predecessors, such as launching pre-financing without safeguards and removing price caps on services.
Regarding the deposit system, Hennig-Kloska acknowledged logistical challenges, noting the concentration of returns at automated locations and ongoing collaboration with operators to improve the system.
Opposition Criticisms and Government Response
The no-confidence motion against Hennig-Kloska, signed by approximately 100 MPs from Konfederacja and PiS, alleges a lack of action regarding EU climate policies, chaos surrounding “Czyste Powietrze,” and neglect in energy sector preparation. Prime Minister Donald Tusk characterized the vote as a test of coalition loyalty.
The motion against Sobierańska-Grendy stems from criticisms of her department’s performance and the deteriorating state of the healthcare system, with accusations of a lack of a coherent strategy and hidden budget cuts within the National Health Fund.
