Polish Official Had to Smooth Over Situation with Trump Over Peace Council Dispute

Poland’s Karol Nawrocki met with Donald Trump in Davos, facing criticism for handling a Peace Council invitation without government support.

Nawrocki-Trump Meeting in Davos

On Wednesday, January 21, Karol Nawrocki spoke with Donald Trump in Davos, Switzerland. According to Wirtualna Polska, the meeting was accompanied by friendly gestures and jokes. A close associate of the president reported that Trump assured Poland of his support, saying, “You can count on me because I know I can always count on you. Don’t worry about it.” The conversation eventually lasted over 40 minutes, with Nawrocki describing how they exchanged greetings multiple times as new topics emerged.

Criticism Over Peace Council Response

People from Nawrocki’s circle criticized the government for its response to a request from the President’s Office regarding Poland’s invitation to the Peace Council. One person told Wirtualna Polska, “Tusk and his ministers in Poland claim they are the only ones who can conduct foreign policy, but they couldn’t even respond to an invitation for Poland to join the Peace Council.” The government’s statement was called “brief” and assessed as “from which nothing follows,” likely referring to a communiqué published on Wednesday by Foreign Ministry spokesman Maciej Wewiór.

Government Accused of Avoiding Issue

According to Marcin Przydacz, head of the International Policy Office of the President of Poland and guest on RMF FM on Thursday, “the government made an evasion in this matter because it wanted to shift it to the president’s office.” Przydacz also criticized the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for sending “a few sentences” after “several days.” “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it’s an interesting initiative, we’ll see more. Meanwhile, Karol had to smooth over the situation with Trump, and he succeeded, because we had no information from the government,” stated an anonymous WP source connected to the Presidential Palace.
