Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s meeting with Viktor Orbán and Tamás Sulyok in Budapest drew sharp rebuke from Poland’s ruling coalition before Hungarian elections.
Criticism from Polish Political Figures
Włodzimierz Czarzasty, Marshal of the Sejm, criticized President Nawrocki’s visit, stating he had “made an idiot of himself” by supporting a leader who has undermined the European Union and demonstrated hostility towards Poland.
Czarzasty further asserted that every Pole should be ashamed that the Polish president travels to support “Putin’s closest friend,” accusing both Orbán and Nawrocki of wanting to dismantle the EU.
Former President Komorowski’s Assessment
Bronisław Komorowski, a former Polish president, acknowledged Czarzasty’s harsh words were “painfully true,” stating Nawrocki had made a “gigantic mistake” that would harm both himself and Poland.
Komorowski urged the current president to learn from this “hasty endorsement of a political ally in another country,” warning against risking Poland’s reputation in foreign political games.
US Ambassador’s Response to Czarzasty
US Ambassador to Poland, Tom Rose, strongly criticized Włodzimierz Czarzasty’s remarks regarding Donald Trump in an interview with the Financial Times, calling Czarzasty a “threat.”
Rose accused Czarzasty of using inflammatory rhetoric to damage US-Polish relations and weaken Poland, suggesting his background as a former communist explains his views.
