Polish Tourist Missing After Vanishing in Madeira Mountains

A 31‑year‑old Polish tourist disappeared during a solo trek in Madeira’s northern foothills, with his last signal received at noon on 2 November.

Last Known Location

On Sunday morning, 2 November, the tourist, Igor Holewiński, spoke with his sister and shared his location, which placed him toward the Levada dos Tornos area.

The final phone ping was logged at 12:00 noon in the same vicinity before communications abruptly ceased.

Search Operations

Immediately after the disappearance, local authorities, volunteers, and members of the Polish community on Madeira mobilised search teams.

Polish Public Security Police (PSP) and the Regional Civil Defence collaborated, deploying drones and ground patrols on the evening of 2 November and continuing the effort into 3 November.

Family’s Account

The tourist was estimated at about 195 cm, slim build, blond hair, and wore glasses. According to his Polish sister, he may have considered walking through a tunnel leading toward Santana, possibly the last place he was seen.

Call for Witnesses

The family urges anyone who may have seen a man matching this description in the Sao Vicente, Pico Ruivo, or Santana areas to contact local police.

Media on Madeira have released his photo and the last known coordinates: 32 ° 47′ 30.8″ N, 16 ° 57′ 29.7″ W, as they search the difficult terrain between the Levada dos Tornos and the tunnel toward Santana.
