Rising costs and inflation are forcing Poles to calculate the financial burden of attending weddings, with gift amounts reaching up to 1500 Zloty per couple.
Wedding Costs and Financial Strain
Inflation is impacting all aspects of life, including wedding attendance. A gift of 500 Zloty was once considered standard, but today, 1000-1500 Zloty per couple, or even more for close family, is increasingly common.
Many guests are now calculating the total cost of attending a wedding – including the gift, travel, accommodation, attire, and a day off work – before deciding whether to attend.
Current Gift Amounts
Poles are giving increasingly larger amounts in wedding gifts. Current estimates suggest the following ranges:
Relationship, Income, and Wedding Cost Factors
The amount given in a wedding gift is primarily determined by the relationship with the couple. However, personal income and the overall cost of the wedding also play a role.
Rising Wedding Expenses
Wedding costs are increasing, with a “plate” (per-person cost) averaging 300-600 Zloty, and even higher in major cities. A wedding for 100 people can cost between 25,000 and 75,000 Zloty, or more.
Some venues are even including clauses in contracts allowing for price increases of up to 15 percent, leading guests to expect their gift to at least cover their share of the cost.
Gift Amounts by Relationship
Typical gift amounts in 2026 are significantly higher than a few years ago, with the following guidelines:
Acquaintance: 400–700 Zloty (800–1200 Zloty for a couple)
The Debate Over Covering Costs
While there’s a traditional expectation that a gift should cover the cost of the guest’s participation, many are now questioning this. Guests face additional expenses like travel and attire, leading to a more flexible approach: give what you can afford.
Increasing Refusals Due to Cost
A growing number of Poles are considering declining wedding invitations due to financial constraints. Approximately 40 percent of Poles are contemplating refusing invitations for financial reasons, particularly those aged 30-39 and 50-59.
Tradition vs. Financial Pressure
Wedding gifts have historically been a form of support for the couple. However, there’s a growing debate about whether this is becoming a social obligation. While many couples emphasize that presence is more important than the gift amount, guests still tend to compare and adhere to unspoken standards.
The most common gift amount given today is 1000-1500 Zloty per couple, but this depends on the relationship and the giver’s financial situation.
