Investigations into the tragic accident that occurred Thursday afternoon in the Lublin region are underway. A 20‑year‑old driver was reportedly heading to fatally hit a 13‑year‑old cyclist. According to Gazeta.pl, experts will determine the amount of alcohol in the man’s body at the time of the crash. The 20‑year‑old faced charges but was not arrested.
Tragic Accident in Puławy
On Thursday around 2 p.m. on Dęblińska Street in Puławy, the accident occurred. “A 20‑year‑old driving an Audi from Piłsudskiego Street onto a marked pedestrian crossing hit a cyclist who entered the crossing. He then collided with a properly travelling Volvo driven by a 58‑year‑old,” reports the Lublin Regional Police Headquarters. The 13‑year‑old cyclist died at the scene.
20‑Year‑Old Under Influence of Alcohol
Investigations were conducted on Friday. “The man was charged with causing an accident with a fatal outcome,” prosecutor Jolanta Dębiec told Gazeta.pl on Saturday morning. The man is suspected of negligent violations of traffic rules by failing to observe the road’s preparation and moving at an inappropriate speed for road conditions. Analysis of exhaled air and blood tests showed the man had less than 0.5‰ alcohol in his body, which did not support a charge of an accident in a state of drunkenness. Because the tests were carried out some time after the incident, experts will calculate exactly how many per mille the man had at the time of the accident and when he likely consumed alcohol.
Prosecutor’s Decision on Preventive Measures
The circumstances of the incident are still unclear, so monitoring footage was secured to determine, among other things, the speed at which the suspect was traveling. Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver collided with the Volvo in an attempt to avoid hitting the cyclist (the Volvo driver suffered no injuries). No arrest was made for the 20‑year‑old, but he faces freedom‑restricted measures: police supervision, a financial bond, a driving ban, and a prohibition on leaving the country.
