Self-proclaimed border guards hung Polish flags on the Słubice bridge, causing a symbolic border dispute between Poland and Germany.
Jurisdictional Dispute Prolongs Conflict
As Der Spiegel reports, the bridge falls under the jurisdiction of the Brandenburg State Road Authority, while the Polish authority is only responsible for the road on the Polish side of the border. This discrepancy has prevented either side from taking action to remove the flags, extending the symbolic conflict.
Failed Attempts at Resolution
Frankfurt authorities attempted to balance the situation by hanging European Union flags. However, after a month, the EU flags disappeared while the Polish flags remained, despite objections from Słubice city officials who feared further conflict escalation.
Temporary Resolution with Police Assistance
Only after intervention by the Spokesperson of the General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways in Warsaw were the flags finally removed with police assistance. Unfortunately, new Polish flags reappeared on the bridge just two days later.
Symbolic Actions Creating Long-Term Tensions
The situation demonstrates how symbolic gestures can create prolonged tensions between neighboring cities in the European Union, fostering an atmosphere of uncertainty and conflict.
