Military counterintelligence arrested a Defense Ministry employee February 3 for suspected espionage for Belarus.
New Information About the Spy in Defense Ministry
On Tuesday, February 3, the Military Counterintelligence Service (SKW) detained a long-term employee of the Ministry of National Defense. Onet has established that he allegedly worked for the Belarusian intelligence service. According to journalists, SKW knew about this since mid-2024 and used this knowledge to conduct an “operational game” to determine details about his activities and gather information about potential other agents. Meanwhile, he was discreetly removed from access to sensitive information.
Kamiński May Have Been Wrong
Onet’s findings contradict the version provided by former minister-coordinator of special services Mariusz Kamiński. On Wednesday, he claimed that the detained Defense Ministry employee had gone on vacation to Belarus and could not return due to the border closure. “He was caught,” Kamiński wrote, “when he himself informed his superiors that he could not return to work.” According to sources from the leadership of Polish special services, the employee was already under close surveillance by counterintelligence for a year by that time.
Defense Ministry Employee in Custody
The suspect in the espionage case worked in the Department of Strategy and Defense Planning of the Ministry of National Defense. On Wednesday, February 4, he was charged with espionage for a foreign intelligence service and active participation in it, defined in Article 130 paragraph 2 of the Penal Code. “It concerns acting on behalf of a foreign intelligence service and providing it with information whose disclosure may cause harm to the Republic of Poland,” SKW explained. On Thursday, the District Court for the Capital City of Warsaw decided to apply a preventive measure in the form of a three-month arrest against the suspect.
