Three Deaths Reported on Cruise Ship Amid Mysterious Illness

A mysterious illness has claimed the lives of three people aboard the polar cruise ship MV Hondius, with further cases under investigation.

Outbreak on Cruise Ship: Fatalities Reported

The first symptoms appeared in a 70-year-old passenger who died on board the ship. His body was transported to Saint Helena Island, a British territory in the South Atlantic.

The man’s wife, 69, also became ill during the voyage and was evacuated by air to Johannesburg, where she subsequently died in a local hospital.

Confirmed Cases and Critical Condition

According to the AFP news agency, the deceased couple were citizens of the Netherlands. The identity of the third victim remains undisclosed, but they were still on board the ship. A 69-year-old British citizen is in critical condition in intensive care in Johannesburg.

Ship Details and Itinerary

The MV Hondius is a polar cruise ship approximately 108 meters long, with capacity for 170 passengers in 80 cabins. It is owned by the Dutch company Oceanwide Expeditions.

The ship departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 20th and was scheduled to arrive at the Cape Verde Islands on May 4th. Unconfirmed reports suggest that after isolating infected passengers in Cape Verde, the ship will continue its journey to the Canary Islands.

Response from Authorities and WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated it is coordinating with member states and the ship’s operator, including medical evacuations of two additional passengers exhibiting symptoms. The WHO is also conducting a full epidemiological risk assessment and supporting those remaining on board.

South Africa’s Ministry of Health was the first to confirm the reports of the deaths.

Understanding Hantavirus

Hantavirus is a pathogen primarily transmitted by rodents, most often through contact with their urine or feces. In rare cases, the virus can spread from person to person, leading to severe respiratory failure.

Hantavirus has historically been associated with rural and forested areas, making its appearance on a cruise ship an unusual situation.
