Trump Considers Pakistan’s View on Strait Blockade, Islamabad Links It to Iran Peace Talks

U.S. President Donald Trump said he will consider the opinion of Pakistan’s military chief, who believes the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports hinders peace negotiations with Iran.

Pakistan Mediates Amidst U.S.-Iran Conflict

The conflict, which Pakistan is attempting to resolve, began on February 28th with a U.S.-Iranian attack on Iran. In retaliation, Tehran began shelling Israel and U.S. bases and civilian infrastructure in Arab Gulf countries.

Tehran immediately closed the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, impacting oil and gas exports to Asia and, to a lesser extent, Europe.

U.S. Blockade Complicates Peace Efforts

Following unsuccessful peace talks on April 11-12, the U.S. imposed a blockade on Iranian ports. Consequently, both countries are limiting their presence in the Strait of Hormuz and challenging the legality of each other’s actions.

Further Talks Possible Tuesday

Pakistan is conducting intensive diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement between the U.S. and Iran, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, and General Munir playing key roles.

Munir’s Iran Visit and Potential Talks in Islamabad

General Munir concluded a three-day visit to Iran on Sunday, where he coordinated a schedule for a second round of peace talks planned for Tuesday (April 21st) in Islamabad, but the U.S. port blockade has cast doubt on the meeting.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that the U.S. demands are unrealistic and the meeting may not occur, as there are currently no plans for another round of talks.

Iran Criticizes U.S. Actions

The spokesperson accused the U.S. of prioritizing diplomacy in words but not in action, citing the seizure of an Iranian ship, the port blockade, and delays in implementing a ceasefire in Lebanon as “clear violations of the ceasefire” formally in effect until Wednesday.

Pakistani Concerns Over Prolonged Conflict

According to the New York Times, Pakistani politicians fear that a prolonged U.S.-Iran war could lead to the reactivation of Shia groups and increased sectarian violence within Pakistan.

Oath Keepers and Proud Boys Released
