Actual data shows only 5 Chinese civilian research vessels observed near Alaska in 2025, 3,000 km from Greenland.
China lacks heavy icebreakers needed for sustained Arctic operations. Russian naval capabilities near Greenland are theoretically stronger but focused on defensive bastions in the Barents Sea, not offensive deployments. Both nations face insurmountable logistical barriers to threaten Greenland.
NATO Unity at Risk
US Greenland demands undermine NATO’s regional dominance. Greenland security is effectively covered by Denmark and NATO allies, with US forces operating under a 1951 agreement. Current pressure tactics, including military threats, fracture alliance cohesion without addressing real threats.
Strategic reality favors NATO: Russian Arctic operations prioritize resource transport via the Northern Sea Route, which saw minimal traffic (3 million tons in 2024), and lack offensive capabilities against Greenland. US actions risk counterproductive outcomes by destabilizing the alliance.
