Will Ziobro’s US Trip Strain Polish-American Relations? Poll Findings

A new CBOS survey reveals that 17 percent of Poles believe Zbigniew Ziobro’s presence in the United States will negatively affect bilateral relations, while a significant majority remains unconvinced.

Poll Results on Diplomatic Impact

Seventeen percent of respondents stated that Ziobro’s stay in the US would negatively impact Polish-American relations, while another 17 percent were undecided. The survey was conducted via CATI (80 percent) and CAWI (20 percent) methods between May 18 and 20, involving a representative sample of 1,000 Polish adults.

Concerns about a negative impact were expressed similarly by women (17 percent) and men (18 percent), with the highest level of concern found among respondents aged 18–24 (26 percent) and those with primary education (28 percent). Conversely, 71 percent of men and 61 percent of women believe the stay will have no effect, particularly among those aged 55–64 (71 percent) and university graduates (72 percent).

Expert Perspectives on Bilateral Ties

Dr. Małgorzata Bonikowska, president of the Centre for International Relations, stated that while Ziobro’s presence is one of several complicating elements, it should not fundamentally alter relations. She emphasized that Poland cannot afford to worsen ties with such a crucial ally and that the government must mitigate tensions.

Dr. Karol Szulc, a specialist in American studies at the University of Wrocław, agreed that the presence of Ziobro—who is facing criminal allegations in Poland—will likely not shift state-level relations. He suggested that Ziobro has secured a form of protection in the US and noted that the Polish government will likely maintain a facade of stability, as Poland remains dependent on the United States for security architecture.

Background of the Dispute

Zbigniew Ziobro, a former Minister of Justice and Prosecutor General, confirmed he was in the US on May 10 after previously receiving international protection in Hungary. He faces allegations of leading an organized criminal group and misuse of power, including 26 specific charges related to the Justice Fund.
