Hungarian Opposition Leader Shut Out of Public Media During Campaign

Peter Magyar, leader of the TISZA party, has received no invitations to appear on Hungarian public media during the election campaign, which began in late February.

Public Media Avoids Opposition Leader

Peter Magyar has not been invited to appear on public media during the campaign, with the last invitation from public television M1 or public radio Kossuth Radio received in September 2024, according to TISZA’s response to a query from Telex.

Hungarian public media declined to respond directly to questions about the lack of invitations. Instead, they requested information regarding Telex’s foreign funding sources and their proportion of overall activity.

Orbán Refuses Debate with Magyar

Telex also received no response regarding a potential pre-election debate between candidates for prime minister. A January poll by 21 Research Center indicated that nearly two-thirds of Hungarians would like to see a debate between Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Peter Magyar.

Orbán Dismisses Magyar as Opponent

Orbán has consistently rejected the idea of a debate, stating his opponent is not Magyar, but “Brussels bosses” – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European People’s Party Chairman Manfred Weber. Magyar has stated he is ready to debate Orbán if he participates.

Polling Data Shows TISZA Leading

Parliamentary elections in Hungary will be held on April 12th. TISZA currently leads Orbán’s Fidesz in most independent polls. A March survey by Median showed Magyar’s party with a 23-point lead among decided voters, while government-affiliated polls indicate a small lead for Fidesz.
