IRGC Commander’s Death Confirmed
Iranian authorities confirmed on Monday the death of Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, according to state media cited by Reuters.
The IRGC stated Tangsiri died as a result of injuries sustained in what they described as a hostile attack.
Israeli Claims of Targeted Strike
On Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz claimed that Tangsiri and other high-ranking commanders were killed in a “precise and lethal” strike.
Tangsiri’s Role in Maritime Security
The Israeli military reported that Tangsiri was responsible for attacks on tankers and commercial vessels, and directly threatened freedom of navigation and commerce in the Strait of Hormuz and international waters.
Escalating Regional Tensions
The United States and Israel have been conducting strikes on Iran since February 28th, prompting retaliatory attacks by Iran against Israel and Arab nations in the Persian Gulf, targeting American bases and civilian infrastructure.
Structure of Iran’s Armed Forces
The IRGC, alongside the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran, constitutes Iran’s armed forces. According to the constitution, the army is responsible for defending Iran’s borders and maintaining internal order, while the IRGC is responsible for defending the Islamic Revolution and its achievements.
The IRGC includes ground, naval, and air forces, the internal security militia (Basij), and the IRGC-Quds Force, responsible for operations outside Iran’s borders, including asymmetric and terrorist operations.
