A tragic car crash in Łomianki, Poland, on Sunday left two people dead and led to the arrest of a driver found to be under the influence of alcohol.
Deadly Collision in Łomianki
On Sunday, April 12th, around 6:00 PM, a multi-vehicle collision occurred in Łomianki, resulting in the deaths of a 19-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy.
Patryk R., 44, the driver of the Audi suspected of causing the accident, and Piotr B., 33, a passenger in the Audi, fled the scene but were apprehended by police within nine hours.
Charges Filed Against Driver
The driver of the Audi faces three charges: causing a fatal accident while under the influence of alcohol and fleeing the scene, failing to provide assistance to victims (punishable by 5 to 10 years imprisonment), violating driving bans (up to 5 years imprisonment), and possession of narcotics (up to 3 years imprisonment).
The passenger faces a charge of failing to provide assistance to victims, carrying a potential sentence of up to 3 years imprisonment. Prosecutors are considering requests for temporary arrest.
Investigation Details and Alcohol Consumption
Surveillance footage from the accident location and surrounding areas helped identify the driver. Investigators are awaiting results to determine the driver’s blood alcohol content at the time of the crash.
The Audi was traveling at high speed towards Warsaw, weaving through traffic. It collided with a Toyota carrying passengers returning from a picnic, causing the Toyota to crash into four other vehicles.
Critical Injury and Prior Driving Bans
The driver of the Toyota is in critical condition. Another driver sustained a hand injury.
The Audi driver had consumed approximately one liter of vodka around 2:00 PM, according to his statement after a breathalyzer test. He was already subject to two driving bans – one from 2023 for driving under the influence (lasting five years) and another from 2026 for failing to stop for a traffic control (also lasting five years).
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or was in the area at the time to come forward. Contact can be made via phone, email, or in person at the Stare Babice Police Command.
A small amount of marijuana was found during a search of the driver’s apartment.
