European Union leaders expressed relief at a summit free from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s presence, following recent elections in Hungary.
Tusk Highlights Shift in Atmosphere
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that a “huge relief” was felt among leaders, noting the absence of “any Russians in the room” for the first time in years.
Tusk shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the European Council meeting.
Hungarian Election Results as Catalyst
According to Tusk, the change in atmosphere at the EU summit was influenced by the parliamentary elections in Hungary. He expressed satisfaction that the mood was “completely different,” not only regarding Ukraine and Russia but also because the Hungarian election signaled that “democracy does not lose everywhere.”
Tusk emphasized the importance of the victory of Péter Magyar, the leader of the opposition party TISZA, stating it was a “really important” outcome.
Future for Europe, Democracy, and Rule of Law
Tusk continued, stating the results showed a future for Europe, democracy, and the rule of law, and that fighting corruption and figures like Viktor Orbán was now possible.
“No Listening to Putin” at Summit
Government Spokesman Adam Szłapka echoed this sentiment, describing the informal meeting of the European Council as the “first in years without listening to Putin.”
Allegations of Hungarian Collaboration with Russia
Leaked phone recordings between Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov suggest Hungarian authorities worked to advance Russian interests in Europe.
Reportedly, Hungarian authorities proposed transmitting EU documents to Russia via the Hungarian embassy in Moscow and coordinated with Russia to obstruct Ukraine’s European integration efforts.
