US Ambassador Tom Rose cut ties with Polish Marshal Czarzasty after Czarzasty criticized Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize nomination.
Diplomatic Row Erupts
On February 2nd, Polish Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty announced he would not support a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for Donald Trump, stating Trump does not deserve it and that Poland should strengthen existing organizations like the EU and NATO rather than new initiatives like Trump’s “Peace Council.”
In response, US Ambassador Tom Rose severed all contact with Czarzasty, escalating tensions between Polish and US officials.
Former US Officials React
Former US diplomats have strongly criticized Ambassador Rose’s actions. Dan Shapiro, former ambassador to Israel, wrote that diplomacy requires engaging with those you disagree with, unlike what Rose did.
Luis Moreno, former ambassador to Jamaica, went further, stating “the Polish government should declare our so-called ambassador persona non grata and throw his despicable, pathetic ass out of the country.”
Political Fallout and Polling
Democratic members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee have criticized the Trump administration for provoking conflict with Polish authorities. The White House and State Department have not yet responded to the situation.
A recent poll found that most Poles no longer perceive the US as a reliable ally, with only 35% trusting President Trump to act properly in international matters, compared to 75% a year prior.
Call for New Ambassador
Former Danish political adviser Daniel Korski predicted that the exchange between Ambassador Rose and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk will be studied in diplomatic academies worldwide as an example of how not to behave as a diplomat.
Republican Congressman Don Bacon simply stated, “Time for a new ambassador,” reflecting the growing calls for a change in the US diplomatic representation in Poland.
