Hungarian Minister Suggests Hungary Outside EU, Opposition Reacts

Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjártó alluded to Hungary remaining outside the EU during a public appearance, sparking criticism from opposition leader Magyar.

Hungary Outside the European Union?

Minister Szijjártó, while speaking with residents of Nagykata, discussed why Ukraine should remain outside the European Union. He then stated that “Hungary must remain outside the European Union,” adding, “Everyone will know that if we win, that’s how it will be.”

“Freudian Slip or Post-Election Plan?”

Daily News Hungary questioned whether Szijjártó’s statement was a “Freudian slip or a post-election plan.” The publication noted that the remark did not provoke outrage or correction from the audience or politicians present.

Opposition Leader Criticizes Szijjártó

Tisza Peter Magyar, leader of the Hungarian opposition, commented on the Foreign Minister’s words, stating, “Peter Szijjártó, proud recipient of the Order of Friendship personally awarded by Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, let slip that he believes Hungary should be outside the European Union.” He emphasized, “Hungary’s place is in Europe, in the European Union and in NATO.”

“We Are Returning to Europe”

Magyar declared, “In 13 days we are returning home, to Europe,” referencing the date of the parliamentary elections. He asserted that only someone unfamiliar with the country could suggest keeping Hungary outside the EU.

Potential Post-Election Coalition with Far-Right Party

Last week, János Lázár, Hungary’s Minister of Construction and Transport and a Fidesz leader, suggested a post-election coalition with the far-right Mi Hazánk movement, which openly advocates for leaving the European Community.

Public Opinion on EU Membership

A Eurobarometer survey published in February showed that 55% of Hungarians support EU membership, below the EU average of 62%. Approximately 46% have a positive view of the EU, compared to 49% across the Community.

Upcoming Elections and Polls

Parliamentary elections in Hungary will be held on April 12th. Tisza currently leads Fidesz in most independent polls. A March survey by Median showed the party with a 23-point advantage among decided voters, while government-linked polls indicate a several-percentage-point lead for Fidesz.
