An Israeli soldier was identified as the individual who destroyed a Jesus statue in Lebanon, resulting in diplomatic fallout but facing only disciplinary action.
Soldier Faces Disciplinary Action
A regular-duty soldier was identified through information provided by other unit members and has been summoned for questioning. Authorities stated his actions caused “serious reputational and propaganda damage” to Israel, but will result in only disciplinary measures, with no military police investigation.
The military has committed to “assisting the (local) community (in Lebanon) in re-establishing the statue” and affirmed it has “no intention of destroying civilian infrastructure, including religious buildings or symbols.”
Condemnation and Apology from Israeli Leadership
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the destruction of the statue on Monday. Earlier, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar labeled the incident disgraceful and apologized to all, particularly Christians.
Israel’s Offensive in Southern Lebanon
Israel is conducting a ground offensive in southern Lebanon, an area formerly controlled by Hezbollah, the Iran-aligned organization. Hezbollah joined the conflict between the US and Israel with Iran in early March.
Plans for a Buffer Zone
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced plans for the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, approximately 30 km from the border. The military is working to establish a buffer zone along the border to prevent Hezbollah from shelling northern Israel, involving the displacement of local residents and demolition of buildings within a 4 km wide strip.
Since March 2nd, approximately 2,300 people have been killed in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The UN reports over 1.2 million of Lebanon’s 6 million residents have been displaced.
Ukraine’s Evolving Role in the Conflict
Ukraine is no longer solely requesting aid but is offering invaluable military expertise that the West lacks, having become an expert in survival and demonstrating the ability to independently paralyze the foundations of the Russian war machine, according to retired Lt. Col. Maciej Korowaj.
