Levantine Viper Bite Leads to Life-Saving Emergency Airlift in Lesser Poland

A 16-year-old was admitted to the University Children’s Hospital in Kraków after being bitten by an illegal Levantine viper, triggering an urgent international mission to secure life-saving antivenom from Munich.

A Race Against Time

The University Children’s Hospital in Kraków-Prokocim reported that the teenager was admitted to the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care on June 4 around 11:30 PM. Medical staff noted that the bite of a Levantine viper presents a direct threat to life, requiring the immediate administration of specific antivenom to prevent a rapid decline in survival chances.

Upon admission, the anesthesia team began symptomatic treatment and patient stabilization. A search for the required serum involved calls to hospitals, zoos, and tropical medicine centers, eventually identifying the nearest available supply in Munich.

International Logistics and Financing

Hospital staff organized air transport from Warsaw to Germany to retrieve the serum and fly it to Kraków-Balice Airport. The hospital management independently authorized the funding for this emergency operation before receiving guarantees of reimbursement from the National Health Fund (NFZ).

The antivenom reached the department on June 5 after 3:00 PM and was administered intravenously. Following the treatment, the 16-year-old’s condition gradually improved, and doctors confirmed the successful outcome of the intervention.

Illegal Wildlife and Police Investigation

Police officers discovered two Levantine vipers in the teenager’s apartment. These animals are classified as particularly dangerous to human health, and their possession outside of authorized zoological institutions is prohibited in Poland.

The residence also housed other exotic animals, including various snake species, parrots, and giant ants, for which the required permits had been obtained. The police have initiated preparatory proceedings regarding the exposure of others to direct danger of loss of life or serious bodily harm, and are currently investigating how the minor acquired the illegal vipers.
