Seven tourists were injured by a lightning strike on the Giewont summit during a sudden storm on Tuesday, requiring an emergency rescue operation amid severe weather conditions in the Tatra Mountains.
Rescue operation in adverse conditions
Emergency responders received reports at 12:15 p.m. regarding tourists struck by lightning on the Giewont peak. Initial information indicated that one individual sustained serious injuries, while others suffered lighter wounds.
Despite heavy rain and strong winds, a helicopter successfully reached Kondracka Pass, allowing TOPR rescuers to proceed on foot. The most critically injured victim was airlifted to a hospital in Zakopane, while four others were guided to Hala Kondratowa and transported by vehicle.
Post-incident reports
TOPR officials confirmed that two additional individuals independently sought medical attention at the hospital several hours after the incident.
Hazardous weather at the summit
Rescuers emphasize that weather conditions in the Tatra range remain dangerous. The Giewont area, featuring a metal cross, is a frequent site for lightning strikes and atmospheric discharges.
In August 2019, a major tragedy occurred when lightning struck the metal cross atop Giewont. That incident resulted in four deaths, including two children, and left 157 others injured.
