Following reports of a potential troop rotation freeze, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has confirmed upcoming high-level discussions with US military commanders to clarify the status of American forces in Poland.
Diplomatic Consultations Scheduled
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced a meeting for Wednesday with Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff. Prior to this, Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces Gen. Wiesław Kukuła is set to confer with Gen. Alexis Grynkewich, commander of US forces in Europe.
Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that he and Gen. Kukuła maintain constant contact with Gen. Grynkewich and that communication with the Pentagon remains open. The Minister noted that any such high-level visit holds potential for strengthening bilateral military relations.
Reports of Troop Rotation Suspension
Reuters reported on Friday, citing anonymous US officials, that the Pentagon has canceled plans for the rotational deployment of 4,000 soldiers to Poland. CNN further cited sources suggesting that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s move to pause the rotation is part of a broader reduction of US forces in Europe, following the May 1 announcement to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany.
Polish government officials previously denied reports that the American contingent would be reduced. Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz explained that while reorganizations may lead to different brigades being assigned to specific countries, the total number of US forces in Poland is expected to remain at approximately 10,000.
Assurances on Presence Levels
Addressing public concerns, Kosiniak-Kamysz stated on Friday that no decision has been made to limit the presence of US armed forces in Poland. He clarified that the suspension of one specific brigade does not necessarily equate to a total force reduction, as another unit may be slated to take its place.
