Netanyahu Condemns Israeli Soldier’s Destruction of Christ Figure in Lebanon

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed shock and sorrow over a soldier’s destruction of a Catholic icon in southern Lebanon on Monday, April 20th.

Netanyahu’s Response and Israel’s Stance on Religious Freedom

“Yesterday, like the vast majority of Israelis, I was shocked and saddened to learn that an Israel Defense Forces soldier damaged a Catholic religious icon in southern Lebanon,” Netanyahu wrote on X.

Netanyahu emphasized Israel’s commitment to religious freedom, stating, “As a Jewish state, Israel cherishes and upholds Jewish values of tolerance and mutual respect between Jews and adherents of all faiths.”

He added that all religions flourish in Israel, and members of all faiths are considered equal in building the nation and the region.

Contrasting Situations in the Middle East

Netanyahu highlighted the contrast between the situation in Israel and other parts of the Middle East, stating, “While Christians are being murdered in Syria and Lebanon by Muslims, the Christian population in Israel is thriving, unlike in other places in the Middle East.”

He asserted that Israel is the only country in the region where the Christian population is growing and their standard of living is improving.

Polish MP’s Provocation and Condemnation

Konrad Berkowicz, a member of the Confederation party in the Polish Sejm, displayed a flag of Israel alongside a swastika, prompting protests from the Israeli and US embassies and a prosecutor’s investigation.

Reports suggest Berkowicz’s action was intended to appeal to Mentzen ahead of upcoming elections.

International Reactions and Calls for Accountability

Israel expressed regret over the incident and any harm caused to believers in Lebanon and worldwide.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar condemned the soldier’s act as “shameful,” prompting a response from Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.

Sikorski called for the soldier to be punished and for an investigation into the training of IDF soldiers, referencing admissions of war crimes by Israeli soldiers, including the killing of civilians and even hostages.

Confirmation of the Incident and IDF Investigation

A photograph of the IDF soldier destroying the head of the Christ figure during operations in southern Lebanon was published by Palestinian journalist Younis Tirawi and reported by Gazeta.pl.

The IDF confirmed the authenticity of the photograph.

The IDF stated it takes the incident with the utmost seriousness, emphasizing that the soldier’s behavior is completely inconsistent with the values expected of its soldiers, and that the Northern Command is investigating the matter, with appropriate measures to be taken against those involved.
