Prosecutors Seek to Strip Immunity from Three Polish MPs

The National Prosecutor’s Office has filed formal requests with the Sejm to lift the immunity of MPs Katarzyna Ueberhan, Władysław Teofil Bartoszewsksi, and Tadeusz Chrzan to face various criminal charges.

Allegations Against Katarzyna Ueberhan

The prosecutor’s office intends to charge MP Katarzyna Ueberhan with providing false information in six financial disclosures filed between 2019 and 2023, as well as the misappropriation of a leased vehicle. The proceedings, initiated following a referral from the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau, were led by the Poznań District Prosecutor’s Office.

Misappropriation Charges Against Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski

Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski faces allegations of misappropriating funds and residential properties. Prosecutors also suspect him of taking actions to obstruct court rulings by disposing of and gifting assets. The investigation was conducted by the National Prosecutor’s Office following a report by the Ciechanowiecki Collection Foundation.

Irregularities in Public Investment Under Tadeusz Chrzan

MP Tadeusz Chrzan is accused of abuse of power while serving as the Starosta of Jarosław in 2018. Prosecutors allege he provided improper oversight of a shooting range construction project, resulting in approximately 195,000 PLN in damages to the state treasury and additional costs for the county due to fictitious work reporting.

Procedural Status and Further Actions

Current parliamentary immunity prevents further legal action against the three lawmakers until the Sejm votes to lift it or the individuals waive their protection voluntarily. Additionally, a request has been submitted to the European Parliament to allow for the detention of MEP Grzegorz Braun.
