Warsaw Metro Paralyzed After Man Throws Backpack Onto Tracks

Police arrested a 38-year-old Ukrainian national on Monday after he threw a backpack between the tracks at the Centrum Metro station, triggering a major security operation and service disruptions.

Minutes after the incident at the Centrum station, officers from the Police Prevention Unit apprehended the 38-year-old suspect, who had fled the scene. The presence of the abandoned backpack forced authorities to close four stations on the first metro line: Dworzec Gdański, Ratusz Arsenał, Świętokrzyska, and Centrum.

Train traffic was suspended throughout the affected sector, requiring commuters to rely on substitute transport services while the area was secured.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal Response

Police officers, including specialists from the pyrotechnic unit, worked at the scene for approximately two hours to secure the area and assess the bag. The operation concluded with negative results, as no hazardous materials or dangerous items were discovered inside the backpack.

Suspect Held for Questioning

Investigations revealed that the bag contained only the suspect’s personal belongings and daily items. The 38-year-old was unable to provide a logical explanation for his actions and remains in custody at the Śródmieście police station, where officers are continuing to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
