The incident on Przasnyska Street
The accident occurred on Tuesday, June 30, around 5:00 PM at 16B Przasnyska Street, located in a residential zone in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district. According to Miejski Reporter, a 90-year-old man walking with a cane attempted to pass a garbage truck that was blocking his path.
As the man moved around the vehicle, the driver pulled forward, striking the senior. The man fell to the ground, and the truck proceeded to drive over his legs.
Circumstances surrounding the collision
Family members reported that the 90-year-old usually uses a walker. He was leaving his apartment building with his granddaughter when they encountered the garbage truck. The senior decided to walk around the vehicle using his cane while his granddaughter returned to retrieve the walker, which contained a suit intended for another grandson’s wedding.
The man walked past the driver’s side cabin, but none of his relatives witnessed the moment of impact. Despite the garbage truck being equipped with an additional mirror above the windshield, the driver reportedly did not see the pedestrian. Investigators are currently reviewing whether an onboard camera recorded the event. The driver was confirmed to be sober.
Critical injuries and medical intervention
Emergency medical teams and police were called to the scene. After receiving initial treatment, the 90-year-old was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. His injuries are severe, as the vehicle’s wheels crushed his calves and feet, creating a high risk of amputation above the knees.
Police officers conducted an investigation at the site to determine the precise sequence of events, including the victim’s position relative to the truck at the moment it moved and the potential existence of video evidence from the vehicle’s camera.
