The Białystok-Południe District Prosecutor’s Office has ramped up its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the life and death of Krzysztof Kononowicz, with authorities now considering the inclusion of additional criminal charges.
Status of the Investigation
In late 2024, the Białystok-Południe District Prosecutor’s Office initially closed the investigation regarding the alleged abuse of Krzysztof Kononowicz. Despite online evidence showing the man being humiliated, the case was dismissed. The National Prosecutor’s Office is currently reviewing the files and the legitimacy of that decision.
Radio ZET reports that the investigation is now being conducted more dynamically. Over recent weeks, investigators have analyzed extensive materials, questioned dozens of witnesses, and secured medical records from the final years of Kononowicz’s life.
Potential New Criminal Charges
Prosecutors are considering whether to expand the case beyond mental abuse. They are analyzing Article 160, Paragraph 1 of the Penal Code, which concerns exposing a person to immediate danger of death, serious bodily harm, or health impairment, an offense punishable by up to three years in prison.
The law applies even if actions were not intentional, covering negligence or failure to account for consequences. The investigation into the primary charge of mental abuse of a vulnerable person, which carries a sentence of up to eight years, remains ongoing.
Neglect and Medical Documentation
Investigators are examining reports that caretakers provided a diabetic man with milk and sugary drinks, potentially worsening his health. Reports indicate his home was unsanitary and that Kononowicz was in a severe physical and mental state during his final weeks.
Medical staff who intervened at the Białystok home, along with others who appeared in online recordings with the victim, have been questioned. While the investigation was extended until June 17, it is likely to continue for several more months as further actions are required.
Death of Krzysztof Kononowicz
Krzysztof Kononowicz passed away in a hospice at the age of 62. In late December 2024, he was hospitalized with pneumonia, which led to a rapid decline in his health, subsequent resuscitation, and a medically induced coma before his death.
