On December 3, Warsaw will host 35 sites featuring Christmas trees draped in reflective ornaments that pedestrians can pick up for enhanced nighttime visibility.
Launch Date and Scope
On December 3, the city will display 35 Christmas trees across Warsaw, including municipal offices, water utilities, transport hubs, and cultural venues. Pedestrians can freely take reflective ornaments from the branches.
Backed by City and Forest Authorities
The project is a collaboration between the Warsaw City Guard and the Regional Directorate of State Forests in Warsaw, with the guard handling organization and safety promotion.
Goal: Pedestrian Visibility and Safety
The initiative seeks to improve pedestrian safety during the autumn‑winter season when early dusk and limited driver visibility increase risks on city streets.
Reflective Attachments and Usage
The ornaments are clip‑style, set‑on strips, and clips that can be attached to jackets, backpacks, bags, strollers, helmets, or bicycle frames, ideally placed at waist or chest level facing the road.
Effectiveness of Proper Placement
According to data, a correctly positioned reflector can increase a pedestrian’s visibility on the road by up to 150 meters, especially on unlit sidewalks and road edges.
Legal Requirements and Penalties
Pedestrians are legally required to wear visible reflective gear when walking at night on streets and sides of roads; failure to do so can result in a fine of up to 500 zł.
Continuing Initiative and Past Impact
Since its inception, the “Shine with a Reflector” campaign has expanded to more locations, distributing tens of thousands of reflectors each year. Last year’s 10th edition saw over 20,000 items handed out across 34 sites.
