Polish prosecutors have petitioned the Supreme Court to strip Judge Łukasz Piebiak of legal immunity after alleging he tried to force an unfavorable property sale in Warsaw.
The Allegations
Łukasz Piebiak, a judge of Warsaw’s District Court, is alleged by prosecutors to have tried to compel the city‑capital Warsaw to dispose of property carrying significant value on unfavorable terms. The accusations suggest he used his position to influence the outcome of the property transaction.
Legal Immunity and Supreme Court
Because Judge Piebiak enjoys judicial immunity, the prosecution must obtain the Supreme Court’s permission before he can be held criminally liable. The petition has been filed with the highest court pending a decision on whether to lift his immunities.
Potential Penalties
The requested charges carry sentences ranging from one to ten years’ imprisonment. They include attempted judicial fraud and the use of forged documents, both serious offenses under Polish law.
