NATO Condemns Russian Drone Incursion Into Romanian Airspace

A Russian drone violated Romanian airspace during an overnight attack on Ukraine, crashing into a residential building in Galați and injuring two people, prompting an urgent demand for a coordinated response.

Drone Breach Over Galați

During a Russian drone assault on Ukraine between May 28 and 29, a machine entered Romanian airspace and was tracked by radar until reaching the Galați municipality. Authorities did not intercept the drone, citing risks to civilian safety.

The drone eventually crashed onto the roof of a residential building in Galați, igniting a fire and resulting in injuries to two individuals. Romania has notified NATO, the European Union, and the UN Security Council regarding the incident.

NATO and Diplomatic Reactions

NATO spokesperson Allison Hart stated that the alliance condemns Russia’s recklessness and remains in contact with Romanian authorities to bolster defensive capabilities against such threats. The incident has been labeled a serious and irresponsible escalation by the Russian Federation.

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu characterized the breach as a violation of international law. Romania intends to pursue diplomatic measures, asserting that the aggressor’s actions have severe implications for regional security and civilian safety.

Security Council and Defensive Demands

President Nicusor Dan convened the Supreme Council of National Defense to address the incident, calling it the most significant territorial impact since the start of the conflict. He emphasized that the situation requires a decisive and unified response at both national and international levels.

Romania has formally requested that its allies deploy additional anti-drone capabilities to its territory. The government has vowed to maintain maximum firmness in pressuring Russia to halt its military operations and ensure the war does not endanger Romanian citizens.
