The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry expressed regret over Poland’s sharp criticism regarding President Zelensky’s decision to name a military unit after UPA heroes, labeling the reaction a departure from recent bilateral progress.
Kyiv’s Stance on Polish Criticism
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tychyj addressed the backlash on Friday, May 29, expressing disappointment that the naming decision has overshadowed broader efforts to resolve historical disputes between the two nations. He emphasized that the search for common ground, including the resumption of exhumations and the activities of the Historians’ Congress, should remain the primary focus.
Zelensky’s Decree on Military Traditions
On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky officially designated a military unit as the “Heroes of the UPA.” The presidential decree stated that the move was intended to restore the historical traditions of the national army and recognize the unit’s exemplary performance in defending Ukraine’s territorial integrity and independence.
Official Polish Response
The decision sparked immediate condemnation from Polish authorities, including Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who called it troubling, and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, who labeled it unacceptable. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski warned that such historical conflicts serve only the interests of Vladimir Putin.
Calls for Revocation of Honors
Karol Nawrocki, head of the Institute of National Remembrance, suggested that President Zelensky should be stripped of the Order of the White Eagle. He argued that the glorification of the UPA provides substantial material for Russian disinformation campaigns.
