Poland stations 40,000 troops near Belarus border ahead of Zapad-2025 maneuvers

Poland’s Ministry of Defense says it’s ready for the upcoming Russian-Belarusian Zapad-2025 military exercises, positioning 40,000 soldiers along its border.

Defense Minister Preparations

Poland has been preparing for the Zapad-2025 exercises for several months. The Polish military conducted readiness exercises, with over 30,000 Polish soldiers and allies participating to appropriately counter the maneuvers.

Concerns About Offensiveness

Tomczyk emphasized that the Russian-Belarusian exercises are considered offensive, referencing their connections to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and its 2008 invasion of Georgia. “We felt we had to prepare for this situation,” he said.

Warsaw’s Flexibility in Military Strategy

As Poland steps up its defense measures, the country finds itself in a precarious position regarding the balance between military readiness and fiscal responsibility. “Calculations that indicate the cost of destroying one drone are a blind alley,” Tomczyk said.
