Polish Culture Ministry Blocks Kanye West Concert Over Antisemitism

Polish authorities have barred rapper Kanye West from performing in Poland due to his controversial statements, including antisemitic remarks and promotion of hate speech.

Polish MP Challenges West Concert Cancellation

Member of the European Parliament Grzegorz Braun, known for his own controversial views and disruptive behavior, has criticized the cancellation of Kanye West’s concert as “preventive censorship.” Braun stated he has written to the Ministry of Culture regarding the threat to artistic freedom.

Braun announced on Facebook his concerns over the cancellation of the June 19th concert, citing a threat to artistic freedom due to what he termed “preventive censorship” by the Ministry of Culture.

Kanye West’s Controversial Statements

American rapper Kanye West, originally from Chicago, has faced increasing scrutiny for his behavior beyond his music. In May of last year, he released a song titled “Heil Hitler” which included a segment of a 1935 Adolf Hitler speech, and it was subsequently removed from streaming services.

West also sold swastika-emblazoned t-shirts on his official website for $20 each and claimed on X (formerly Twitter) that “slavery was a choice.”

Culture Minister Condemns West’s Views

Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska labeled the planned concert as “unacceptable,” stating on X that West’s actions were not “controversies” but “deliberate crossing of boundaries and normalizing hatred.”

Cienkowska wrote on April 16th that in a country marked by the history of the Holocaust, such behavior cannot be dismissed as mere entertainment, and artistic freedom does not equate to condoning everything. She emphasized that culture should not be a platform for spreading hatred.

Concert Venue Cancels Agreement

The event organizer, Hałas!, announced the following day that the contract for renting the Silesian Stadium in Chorzow would be terminated.

Foreign Minister: Democracy Defends Itself

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and Senate Vice-Marshal Magdalena Biejat jointly announced on X that West would not be permitted to enter Poland.

Sikorski stated that “Democracy has the right to defend itself against radicals. Mr. Kanye West will not come to Poland. The place for fascists is in prison.”

West Maintains Fanbase Despite Controversy

Despite his controversial statements, West remains popular, ranking among the top 10 most listened-to artists on Spotify in the US in 2025. However, his performances have been met with opposition, with authorities in Australia and the UK denying him concert permits in 2025 and 2026, respectively.
