Narutowicza Square Reconstruction Begins in Warsaw

The modernization of Narutowicza Square in Warsaw’s Ochota district commences, promising a greener public space by the end of 2026.

Reconstruction Project Launched

The reconstruction of Narutowicza Square has begun, transforming the heart of Ochota into a green space for relaxation and outdoor gatherings. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

The investment is being carried out jointly by the Capital City Road Development Management and Warsaw Trams, with Zakład Remontów i Konserwacji Dróg as the contractor.

Greener Space and Improved Aesthetics

Narutowicza Square will feature increased greenery, including new trees, pergolas for shade, and diverse plantings of low-growing plants, shrubs, and flowerbeds. The tram tracks will also be covered with sedum, enhancing aesthetics and reducing noise.

Enhanced Pedestrian and Cyclist Infrastructure

Pedestrians will benefit from even and comfortable granite sidewalks. A contraflow lane will be designated on Akademicka Street for cyclists, improving their safety. The two tram stops at the loop will be extended to accommodate longer tram compositions.

Parking and Accessibility Improvements

The project includes organized parking with designated bays and wider sidewalks for pedestrians. The square will be adapted for people with disabilities, featuring guiding paths, tactile paving, and corrected tram crossing layouts.

Traffic Disruptions – April 2024

Roadworks began on Monday, April 20th, with the closure of the road connecting Akademicka Street and Narutowicza Square, including pedestrian access. Traffic from Uniwersytecka will only be permitted to turn right or left onto Akademicka.

Parking will be prohibited near the closed road and on sections of Akademicka Street. Work on the tram stop opposite the church will begin on Thursday, April 23rd, closing the left lane of Grójecka Street towards Wawelska.

Tram Line Disruptions – Late April/Early May

Tram workers will replace approximately 100 meters of track and sub-base at the platform for lines terminating at the square over the weekend of April 18-19, without disrupting tram service. Further track work will begin on Monday, April 27th, near the church.

From April 27th to May 3rd, trams will not operate between Narutowicza Square and the P+R Al. Krakowska and Banacha loops. This disruption will also be used for connecting the new tram line to the West Station.

Lines 1, 7, 9, 14, and 15 will operate to Narutowicza Square, while lines 22 and 25 will terminate at Starynkiewicza Square. Replacement bus line Z-9 will run along the closed tram route, with additional buses serving the intersection of Aleja Krakowska and Hynka Street.
