Presidential Office Calls for Measured EU Climate Policy Shift

During a Senate committee hearing on Tuesday, Chief of Staff Paweł Szefernaker advocated for a more rational approach to climate change, arguing that current EU mandates threaten European industrial stability.

Addressing the EU Climate Strategy

Presidential Chief of Staff Paweł Szefernaker stated that President Karol Nawrocki does not dismiss EU climate policy as inherently negative. However, he emphasized that the transition must be executed thoughtfully rather than at a pace dictated unilaterally by Brussels.

Senate Deliberations on Referendum

Combined Senate committees—covering EU affairs, economy, infrastructure, climate, and agriculture—are currently reviewing the President’s proposal for a nationwide referendum. Szefernaker argued that the President is fulfilling campaign promises by seeking public opinion on the policy.

Economic and Security Concerns

The presidential office contends that the current pace of climate reforms destroys European industry, imposes unacceptable social costs, and increases dependency on China. Szefernaker urged the Senate to support the referendum, framing the issue as a debate over the continent’s long-term economic prosperity and security.

Proposed Referendum Details

Submitted in early May, the referendum is proposed for September 27. The question focuses on whether citizens support a climate policy that has contributed to rising living costs, energy prices, and increased financial burdens on businesses and farmers.
