Russia: Ex-Justice Minister Found Dead in Bathtub

Former Russian Deputy Justice Minister Sergey Tropin, 65, found dead in his Moscow apartment bathtub, with authorities citing acute heart failure as cause.

Body Discovered

Russian agency TASS reported on Friday evening that the body of 65-year-old Sergey Tropin was found in the bathroom of his apartment at Krasnogvardeyskaya Street 3 in Moscow. Russian media indicated that the man was lying in the bathtub.

Official Cause of Death

On Saturday morning, TASS reported that the cause of death for Sergey Tropin was acute heart failure. RIA Novosti reported that according to preliminary findings, the death was not the result of a crime.

Tropin’s Career

Sergey Tropin served as deputy minister of justice from February 1996 to March 1997 during the presidency of Boris Yeltsin.

Pattern of Mysterious Deaths

The Moscow Times portal has documented that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, more than 20 state officials have died under mysterious circumstances, with deaths recorded every month in the first half of 2025.

Among the deceased officials were Konstantin Kluyev, deputy head of the Vladivostok general staff; Roman Starovoyt, minister of transport, and his deputy Andrey Korneychuk; Igor Rozhnev, deputy head of the Federal Penitentiary Service in Krasnoyarsk; and Yevgeny Golovatyy, deputy head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Department P.
