Sikorski: Poland Has No Plans to Join Middle East War

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski confirms Poland has no plans to join military actions in the Middle East following tensions with Iran.

Poland’s Position on Middle East Conflict

Polish and American interests are similar and largely overlap, though not identical in all aspects, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated in an interview with “Rzeczpospolita.” When asked specifically about Poland joining a war in Iran, Sikorski responded that “there are no such plans.”

President Karol Nawrocki has already declared that he will not agree to Polish military participation in this conflict. Both the government and president express political solidarity with key allies, including the United States, Turkey, Cyprus, and countries in the Persian Gulf region.

Redzikowo Base and Missile Defense

Regarding the base in Redzikowo, designed for defense against potential threats, Sikorski noted that in the agreements he negotiated and signed, “it is written that it is to detect and neutralize missiles that could threaten Europe and the United States.” He added that “Iran has not launched such missiles.”

Assessments of Iranian Threat

When asked if Iran posed a direct threat to Americans, Sikorski acknowledged that the United States and Israel naturally have their own assessments of the situation, but he personally “did not observe a direct threat” to the US, Europe, or even Israel.

Historical Context on Preventive Wars

Addressing Trump’s suggestion that this constitutes a preventive war, Sikorski noted that such wars can sometimes be justified. He referenced the unproven theory that Marshal Józef Piłsudski proposed a preventive war against Nazi Germany to France in 1933. Sikorski stated he found no evidence of such a proposal, but acknowledged that if such a preventive war had occurred then, it might have spared the world much suffering.

Reactions to Regional Tensions

Sikorski mentioned that Poland was aware before the attack on Iran that “something might happen,” but “did not know the final decision or date.” He quoted his friend Zbigniew Brzeziński as saying, “no one ever thanks us for crises we prevented.”
