Tusk Condemns Rising Wave of Xenophobic Rhetoric in Sejm

During a session of the Sejm on Wednesday, June 10, Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that recent discriminatory rhetoric against various ethnic groups poses a grave danger to the Republic.

A Warning Against Growing Hatred

Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the parliament, stating that recent events in the media and the Sejm have taken on a concerning tone. He emphasized that certain statements made in public discourse are deeply humiliating for every patriot.

Tusk cautioned that isolated incidents and verbal attacks are coalescing into a dangerous wave. He warned that this trajectory echoes patterns seen in Europe over the last 150 years, which historically culminated in catastrophic events like the Second World War.

Concerns Over Targeting Minority Backgrounds

The Prime Minister specifically cited inflammatory comments questioning the legitimacy of a deputy minister serving in the Polish government due to his Ukrainian heritage. He linked this to recent remarks made by journalist Dorota Gawryluk regarding Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Andrzej Szeptycki.

Tusk also recalled past extremist rhetoric calling for the eradication of political opponents, as well as hateful language previously directed at Jewish and German communities. He argued that these collective expressions of xenophobia are increasingly being validated by figures who should be considered serious, thereby emboldening broader segments of society to propagate hatred.
