Winter storm shocks drivers: Accidents, fender‑benders, fallen trees – IMGW alerts

Polish fire and police forces dealt with nearly 250 incidents across the country during a winter storm that dumped heavy snow in large parts of the nation on Wednesday, 26 November.

Interventions across Poland

IMGW issued weather alerts for Wednesday, 26 November, and heavy snow fell over large parts of the country. By noon, firefighters had carried out nearly 250 interventions nationwide in response to hazardous road and weather conditions. The most affected voivodeships were Lower Silesian (85), Greater Poland (67), Subcarpathian (19), and Lesser Poland (19).

Accidents, fender‑benders, and fallen trees

Throughout the day, traffic reports highlighted numerous incidents. On DW 408 a truck entered a ditch and collided with a car, injuring both drivers who were taken to hospital. Other motorists also ended up in ditches, and slick streets led to multiple fender‑benders. Firefighters had to clear fallen trees. The local portal of Wieleń County (Łódź Voivodeship), kulisy.net, reported a bus collision on DW 480 involving three women who were hospitalized; the bus overturned after failing to slow down and plunged into a ditch.

Blocked DK 46 road

On national road 46, the snow depth halted traffic between Kłodzko and Złoty Stok. Trucks stranded there blocked winter maintenance routes, and snowplows were unable to operate on the section. Police cleared the obstruction by escorting at exits and reopening the road in both directions.

Further warnings

Warnings of intense snow falls remain in effect for central and western Poland until the morning of Thursday, 27 November. IMGW cautions the voivodeships of Masovian, Warmian‑Masurian, Kuyavian‑Pomeranian, Opole, Lower Silesian, Łódź, and Greater Poland, while road ice may also appear in Podlaskie, Lublin, and eastern Masovian. Authorities urge motorists to exercise caution amid the conditions.
