Several dozen Hepatitis A cases reported at Poznań hospital as authorities work to contain outbreak.
Outbreak Response
While there were reports of several infections on Monday, the number has risen to more than a dozen cases by Tuesday at the hospital. According to TVP3 Poznań, the hospital administration is collaborating with sanitary authorities and implementing measures to limit the spread of the disease.
The infections likely occurred several weeks ago, as the incubation period for the virus can last up to 50 days. Individuals who may have been sources of infection no longer work at the hospital and have been vaccinated.
Epidemiological Actions
“In cooperation with the Provincial Hospital in Poznań, we are taking all possible actions to ensure the safety of both staff and patients,” said Jarosław Gumienny, head of the epidemiological department of the Poznań County Sanitary-Epidemiological Station, as quoted by TVP3 Poznań.
The authorities are focusing on “breaking the chain of transmission,” enhancing immunity of those exposed to infection, and identifying individuals who may be infected but are not yet showing symptoms.
Hepatitis A Information
Hepatitis A (also known as foodborne jaundice) is primarily transmitted through the fecal-oral route – through contact with infected feces, contaminated water or food. The incubation period ranges from 6 to 50 days, with initial symptoms typically appearing about two weeks after infection. Most patients recover without complications, and the liver returns to full function within 2-3 months. The risk of severe course or death mainly affects individuals over 50 with pre-existing liver problems.
Diagnosis of Hepatitis A is based on medical examination (including enlarged and tender liver, jaundice) and laboratory tests that allow assessment of organ damage and differentiation between recent and past infection.
Treatment and Prevention
Treatment is mainly symptomatic – rest, proper hydration, and limiting medications, especially those burdening the liver. Prevention is based on hygiene, water and food quality control, and vaccinations. The Hepatitis A vaccine, administered in two doses 6-12 months apart, provides protection for over 10 years. Vaccination is particularly recommended for individuals infected with Hepatitis B or C viruses, childcare facility workers, and municipal services personnel having contact with sewage and waste that may be sources of the virus.
